What Life Whispered to Me…

Day 23 of Blog Every Day in May. Today’s topic: things you’ve learned that school won’t teach you.

IMG_3022{This picture has nothing to do with the post besides the fact that here I am doing life learning #5: trying something new a few summers ago that I never thought I would be doing…lobster and crab fishing…on a real live fishing boat…in Maine.  What?!}

Take joy in the little things of life.  It is so easy to sit back and fall into your routine for the day, and when you do that you will miss out on the joy around you.  Go for a walk.  Invest in friendships.  Stop and feel the warmth of the sunshine falling on you.  Take a deep breath and smell the flowers.  Dance in the rain.  Sing songs while you clean.  Enjoy the life God has given you.

Shoot for the moon and you’ll land among the stars.  There will always be people who will tell you that you can’t do it, but you don’t know until you try.  If you beat yourself down and don’t even give yourself a chance, you have already failed.  Don’t convince yourself of failure before you try, because you know what, you might succeed!  And if you don’t, try, try, and try again.  You’ll be amazed at where you will go if you have confidence in yourself.

Doing life with others is very important.  We are created to be social beings who need one another and need relationships.  You cannot live a healthy life without others.  Take the time to talk to others, having meaningful conversations, even if you are tired or have a lot of work to do.  You won’t regret it.

You are the one who chooses whether to have a good day or bad day, whether you have a positive or negative outlook on life.  Don’t blame others for your thoughts, words, and actions.  You have the choice of how you act and react.  Take ownership.  You can choose to have a positive outlook on life and have a good day, even if things are going wrong around you.  Step back, reevaluate the situation, and think before you speak.  If you work on changing your thoughts from negative to positive, your actions and attitudes will follow.  It’s a daily choice.

Try new things, even if they seem scary or are out of your comfort zone.  You will never know what you’ll discover you like until you try new things.  You will be amazed at what you can do.  Don’t let fears paralyze you.  You will find that new situations can challenge you and make you grow, if you let it.  Go skydiving.  Try deep sea fishing.  Drink tea instead of coffee.  Move to a new city.  Write a book.  Start a blog.  Just do something you have been wanting to do but are a little scared to take the first step.  It might be the best thing you have ever done.

Take care of yourself.  If you don’t take care of yourself, you cannot care for others well.  You don’t want to get so focused on taking care of your family, helping friends, getting wrapped up in work, that you forget to re-energize and take a break for yourself.  Keep yourself healthy.  Eat well, take a walk, read a book, paint your nails, get a massage, relax by the pool…do something that brings you joy so that you can bring joy to others.


And so that wraps up some of the things that I have learned outside of school.
